CONVERSATIONS IN COLOR
Conversations in Color was inspired by my relationship with my 100 year old friend and portrait artist Ilona Royce Smithkin. Ilona and I both use color in our work, however our appreciation of color goes far beyond the easel. One can choose to see the world in black and white, or one can see it in full COLOR and fully engage with it. We share a very saturated point of view. Ilona draws people’s eyes and in that exchange often reveals what is truly within their spirit. This inspired the graphic eyes that informed the patterns and many silhouettes in the collection. A conversation is verbal, but also visual - I created that exchange by using vibrant colors and contrasting fabrics, like rich silks and velvets against meshes and canvas. The conversation in color extended to edge of the garment, from block printed finishes to velvet bindings.
